It seems like not a week goes by without Marvel Comics having some sort of PR nightmare, whether it’s smaller things like Gabby Rivera’s America making a gang of “privileged” white cyborgs the enemy, or what we saw this weekend with X-Men Gold #1 — artist Ardian Syaf’s decision to put anti-Christian and anti-Semitic messaging into his work.
Yes, that’s right, of all the books to go down bigotry path, it had to be the book that is supposed to be the “gold” standard of tolerance and acceptance.
There is much more to say about this issue, so for all the details on The House the Axel Alonso Built and its slow-motion implosion, I invite you to check out my latest YouTube video. As always, make sure to subscribe if the format is up your alley, and please share your thoughts in the comments section below.
I can’t say that I’m surprised. And I don’t buy that they didn’t know. I think they didn’t care, and didn’t expect others to catch on. This is why I won’t let my son read Marvel, instead we steer him towards graphic novels, manga and stories that teach him moral lessons. I’m not religious, but good and evil exist and exist and pretending otherwise is silly.
They seem to be losing their minds about something else Axel Alonzo said at a meeting.
It’s hilarious reading some of the comic site reactions…some said that Marvel reacted immediately, while others said they didn’t get a reply very quickly at all…about the same exact news. It’s TOUGH to be a shill…you get a story like this and all the mainstream Comic Journalists are standing around saying “umm…should we cover for this artist? Or attack him?! ….Tell us what to do before we publish MARVEL!!!!! L. M. A. O.
Even the commenters needed their orders. “Is that bad? Or is this another directed attack by the anti-diversity crew?!”
Fortunately, G. Willow Wilson came out with a dissembling “It doesn’t mean that, but I still think that artist is full of crap, and translations piss me off, bullshitery, blahblahblah, I’m mad” piece. so with the proper marching orders, the small world of SJW comic book fans have finally taken the right side. Give it time though.
For an old fan like me? This is actually pretty par for the course. The X-men long ago took on the mantle of “Diversity and inclusion means keeping other out and only tolerating people who think like us” So planting a Quran quote on Colossus “How’s your conversion going Colossus!!! LOLOLOLOL” …is just like ‘America’. After Bendis was done with this crew, It’s almost refreshing for a guy to just turn the X-men into Jakarta 212 protesters with a chip on their shoulder, completer with ‘dirty jew’ leader…Marvel is burning in it’s own garbage, and finally an anti-semite saw the invitation and just drew it everywhere…hey? what’s the harm, everyone else tosses their politics in here and calls out certain groups like Republicans, white people, Americans and Men? How bout some Jews and Christians!!
Oh…and they knew. The hypocrisy was just way too much for them to hold on to it…but a little subtler, and the guy walks. Just another story you’ll only find where the ‘alt-righters’ talk about comic books. Which is everyone that isn’t them.
I can see Marvel not knowing the numerical references as they appear to really only mean something to someone familiar with Indonesian politics.
However, I am not sure why they wouldn’t be in the slightest bit curious what was on Colossus shirt. I can’t see any American looking at that and thinking its is odd since it does not conform to any sports jersey format. Even if they didn’t want to ask him, they could have done a simple Google on it and found out what it mean. From there they could have asked if anything else in the pages meant anything and nipped this in the bud.
They had to know though that he was known for doing this at DC, and at least had an editor go over it with a fine tooth comb just to be safe.
So Marvel is either, lazy and incompetent or complicit. Neither is a good look, and it would be kind of funny if this is the beginning of the end for this nonsense at Marvel. There is no coming back from this, their policies and attitude allowed an anti-Semitic and anti-Christian message to be hidden in several pages of a major comic.

Exactly. I was saying on the YouTube channel that anyone who is a practicing Christian, Jew, or Muslim would have had their “religion radar” go off after looking at Colossus’ shirt. An editor who supposedly had a liberal arts education should have been suspicious as well, but then again the education system is in disarray.
So, how was the issue as far as the story itself and all that?
Looks like Marvel actually fired him for this.

“Looks like Marvel actually fired him for this.”
Once this started breaking into the mainstream media, Mr. Syaf was toast at Marvel.
Looks like we’re in for another “treat:” http://thefederalist.com/2017/05/10/x-men-torture-head-heritage-think-tank-new-comic-book/
