There is a very fine line between showing the American people that you can relate to them as President of the United States and demonstrating beyond a reasonable doubt that you have absolutely no shame. President Obama’s attempt to sell generational theft to young people by taking part in a Funny or Die skit with Zach Galifianakis, while funny, clearly falls into the latter category.
Political opponents who say that President Obama wasn’t funny are wrong — he was funny. That’s not the problem. The problem is that he is in a position where he must pitch Obamacare on ‘Between two Ferns’ in the first place.
Question: Is it funny to hear Zach Galifianakis ask the president the following questions?
“Why would you get the guy who created the Zune to make your website?”
“You said if you had a son you would not let him play football. What makes you think he would want to play football? What if he was a nerd, like you?”
Question: Is Vladimir Putin laughing his ass off as he moves into Ukraine’s Crimea region (and possibly beyond?) with thousands of Russian troops, knowing that he’s just secured for himself a warm water port?
Mediaite is upset because Fox News anchors are panning the president’s decision. It essentially argues that in this case the ends justify the means because millions of people have seen the president’s sales pitch. Again, that’s not the point. One gets the feeling that if the president made a video on healthcare.gov with James Franco hitting him in the face with a pie that Mediaite would play apologist for the administration because “it is apparently driving some real traffic” to the site.
Is this skit funny? Yes. Does it make the president look like a desperate clown? Yes.
One would think that Millennials who pride themselves on being smart enough to appreciate Zach Galifianakis’ humor would also have the intellectual goods to understand that the president thinks they’re all morons. Mr. Obama needs them to sign up in order to pay for one of the most self-centered generations of all time — the Baby Boomers. Since liberal Millennials like irony, how is this for irony: the same kids who voted for Obama because they wanted to stick it to old “racist” white guys now are being encouraged to shell out their hard-earned cash by Obama to pay for the massive health care bills of old white guys. Classic.
Question: If you were a member of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, would you fear President Obama? I wouldn’t. Laugh while you can, Millennials. The world’s worst actors have also been watching Mr. Obama, and they will respond accordingly.
